More sketching

For the past...two days, after class, I've been traveling around the Ringling campus with my friend John Carvajal. We visit any place that has interesting subjects (you can call them people if you'd like) and just draw them. Tonight we visited FEWS which is a figure drawing workshop held every....well I'm not exactly sure when it's held. I think it's every day or week?....idk, but I should attend it more often. We both got to draw a model, which is nice because we don't have any figure studio classes at the moment. Most importantly I get to work in my sketchbook. The sketchbook to me has been something of a companion lately, as it should've been along time ago. I'm really trying to develop my skills as an observer while trying to work on things that are purely imaginative. Drawing from life helps me to draw what I want out of my mind. It expands my visual library so that I have more information to pull from when sketching something. Here's what I did today.

Here are a bunch of pages from this current sketchbook. The first image was created last semester at some point. The last one was created today so it's ordered chronologically. The real abstract one and the one after that we're a fun experiment. The weird line one is abstract shapes and lines i saw in my mind or on the inside of my eye lids. the second one I wanted to see if I could draw my surroundings with my eyes closed. So it's kind of a memory exercise only I intentionally didn't give myself enough time to take in every object. Also, I mostly only drew my legs cuz I was anxious to see the results. Next time I will try it again. Enjoy!

Mega update!

So it's been quite a while since my last update so I apologize for that. However, I have been busy with things. Here are some sketchbook pages along with the progress for a piece I'm working on inspired by the game Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery (first image). A well spent five dollars on the App Store. Check it out. It also has a badass soundtrack by Jim Guthrie, I also purchased that. I will resume my regular posting cycle from now on. See you soon.

I love monotypes! Here's a few I've made in the past week. The two similar ones are part of a triptych that will be for sale, so if you're interested comment or email me. The middle one will also be for sale and it's actually one of my favorites that I've made. I will be posting more monotypes in the very near future.

The mountain-side people of Joobah Doobeh
lived on the terrain of the old riverbed
they prodded and poked at all things unknown
till they came across one that would poke in their homes
a giant of sorts with such monstrous hands
with teeth large enough to chew up a mini-van
his feet were ginormous and smelly at that
at least he looked stylish in his giant red hat.

BOOKS! and WEBSITE!

First post in a long time! Been working lots. Here's one thing I've been pretty excited about. BOOKS! I made these books in my Artist's Books class. I'm really falling for this process despite the occasional vocal swear.
     I'm also working on a website. Yessir (and Mam), it's gett'n O-fficial! When I'm done with the site I'll post it up and this blogger page will be used to post....well what I've been posting.

A while back I started this piece and posted some progress on it. It wasn't until recently that i picked it up and decided to finally finish it. I guess I could do more work to it but for the most part I'm happy with it, and I took from it what I needed.

 "Illustrations can be beautiful, exciting, frightful, impressive, immersive or any other adjective you can think of. However, behind the beauty and attractive aesthetic there is struggle. Sometimes."-Me
 
     When I begin thinking about an illustration I almost immediately have an idea of what I more or less want. I don't act on it right away. I know that my first idea is just that: the first idea. Instead, I sit around thinking about how cool it would be to see that idea finished. I get caught up in that idea and want it more and more to be done, but I don't work on it. While watching the Science channel I think about how much cooler everyone will think I am when I complete this illustration. I go to sleep with that idea on my mind and as I fantasize about how rewarding it will be to see it finished I encounter other ideas. Other compositions, different mediums, color schemes etc. All these things rush through my mind at night. Sometimes to no avail, but other times I wake up with a better idea.
     So I finally am set on an idea, which is most likely the one I started off with only with a bit of a twist. Then I do what I think I should do: thumbnails. But I ignore those. Then I stop what I'm doing and proceed to waste away my life on the internet writing blogs, reading useless, but sometimes engaging and entertaining posts on facebook, and wondering why other artist are so much better than me. I then wonder why I'm so bored and have nothing to do.
     After about what seems like an eternity of thinking about the worst possible expected failure I come to the realization that my illustration is due tomorrow. I first think "shit". Then I say "eh, I'll be alright". Finally, I get to work on my illustration. During this process I render the hell out of some insignificant portion of the composition. Makes me feel better I guess. Then I erase everything while thinking 'I should've done more thumbnails. Damnit'. I then arrive at a final destination. This is usually based on what I partially have on my screen/surface. I just mess everything up so much and mix it around enough that I can't be upset with it anymore because it was intentional. Anything I do after this point looks so much better. Then I take a break.
     When I get back to work I notice all the parts that suck. I fix them and continue to work. When I work I usually listen to an album from start to finish. I believe that's the only way to listen to an album unless the band sucks. So when the album is done I spend an unnecessarily long period of time deciding what to listen to next. Which leads to a break.
     This goes on for quite some time, back and forth, but in the end I'm usually happy with where my piece has ended up or is going.
     I have three days to finish two illustration and start a third one. Here we go again.
